Overcoming Giants: Separated from the Power of Sin

Rom 6:2-4 says, “God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

Last week we discussed the great topic of the sin nature, which could take weeks to properly explain and discuss as it is the believer’s greatest internal enemy and the cause for his problems. Most believers have never heard of the sin nature. And those who have heard probably haven’t been properly instructed as to what the sin nature actually is.

This monarchial giant is the power that the believer has no defense against in his own strength and ability. If the believer has no defense in his own strength, then how can he be free from this monster? Paul dedicated Romans Chapter Six to explain the believer’s answer to the power of the sin nature. The greatest news for the sinner is that he can be forgiven of all of his sins. The greatest news for the believer is that he doesn’t have to be dominated by sin any longer.
Paul stated that the reason the believer no longer has to continue in sin is due to the fact that the believer is already dead to the sin nature. It was this passage, Rom 6:2-4, that the Lord used in my own personal life to reveal the victory that we have in Jesus Christ.

I will never forget being at Jimmy Swaggart Bible College in my Romans Part I class with Brother Loren Larson. Brother Larson began to instruct on the simple definition of death. He explained that death means “separation.” When there is a death, there is a separation—a relationship change—from your previous course in life. Death means that we have been unplugged from life. This is exactly what happens to us when we accept Jesus Christ. Not only were all of our sins forgiven, but we were unplugged from the power of the sin nature.

In Romans 6:3, we are provided with Paul’s explanation as to how we became separated from the power of sin. It was by simple faith in Jesus Christ that you accepted Him, and at that moment, you were baptized into Jesus Christ. This simply means that you were removed from one environment and immersed into a new environment. You were fully immersed into the person of Jesus Christ and therefore fully immersed into the work that He did at Calvary. You are Crucified with Christ (Gal. 2:20).

This great victory on the Cross has unplugged the power of the sin nature in your heart and life! You are now free from the power of the sin nature, and you can now walk in newness of life! The Cross has destroyed the power of the sin nature in your life! This is the knowledge that we need to know.

Next week, we’ll take a look at what Paul meant when he said, “Reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin” (Rom. 6:11). This simple phrase will prove to be essential for us to live victoriously over sin!
