A Generation In Its Right Mind

Mark 5:1-6 says, “And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. 5And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him.”

The country of the Gadarenes was located on the southeast side of the Sea of Galilee. In the eighth chapter of his book, Jeremiah asked a very important question: “Is there a balm in Gilead?” This question was answered the day Jesus Christ into the country of the Gadarenes, which is the same region of Old Testament Gilead that Jeremiah wrote about.

Jeremiah asked, “Is there a balm?” and now we sing, “There is a balm!” There is healing for the fallen, sin-stricken, hopeless, and psychotic sinner today, and His name is Jesus Christ.

You can almost sense the overwhelming chaos in the life this man was living, hiding himself in the tombs. Luke tells us this man had not just started living this way; it had been his way of life for a long time.

The Bible does not tell us anything about how this poor man came to be in this state. All that we really know about him is captured in the vivid imagery provided by the gospel writers.

I would just like to take a moment to speculate on the life he may have once had. He could have been a father. He was certainly somebody’s son. He could have once been a loving husband. At one time, he may have had wealth and prestige. Earlier in his life, he may have even been quite religious.

I say all of that to say this: the condition this man would one day find himself could happen to any one of us. If we don’t answer the call for salvation, and if we don’t attend to our relationship with the Lord, we could all found ourselves in his situation.

This man wandered in the mountains and the tombs all day and night. He made the place where the dead were buried his home. He was never clothed and could not care a bit about his outward appearance.

There are many people in the world today who are like this man on the inside of their hearts; they just know how to dress it up. They are clothed in their own self-righteousness, which is not righteousness at all, and they are living among those who have been killed by religion.

This man was described as a man who could not be tamed. When the people would try to restrain him, he was too strong for them and overpowered them and their chains. This is what religion will try to do—bind the sinner with chains of good works, but its chains have no power to restrain those dominated by the power of sin.

This man was is described as a man who cut himself with stones, no doubt because of the pain and torment caused by the control of sin and the powers of darkness in his life. Sin may seem pleasurable for a moment, but it leaves one in a condition that’s willing to go to great lengths to alleviate the pain.

What I have just described to you is this current generation. They may be in church, but their churches are dead in religion. They cannot be controlled. They are naked, or in the rags of self-righteousness. They are searching for any means to alleviate the pain. This is the current condition of this generation. They are the demoniac generation and chains of religion are not what they need.

However, I do have some good news: Jesus is about to move in a way, by His Spirit, that this world has never seen before. He is about to show up to bring a healing balm to this demoniac generation. We will be amazed when we come out to find them clothed, in their right minds, and sitting at the feet of Jesus Christ.

I hear the sounds of chains falling down as another slave walks away free! God is not done, yet!
